A long, long time ago there was a very rich king named Midas who lived with his daughter, Marigold, in the grandest palace in all of Europe.

King Midas loved Marigold very, very much and he loved his wealth almost as much.

One evening, just as the sun was setting, King Midas took Marigold on a stroll through his garden when they spotted a stray puppy playing in a just-bloomed bed of flowers.

Remembering that a stray couldn't know any better, King Midas decided they should give the puppy a good home instead of yelling at or harming her.

Upon hearing of the King's good deed, the god Dionysus offered King Midas a single wish.

King Midas looked at his daughter and seeing how satisfied she was already with her new puppy, he decided to use the wish for himself. "I wish for everything I touch to turn into gold," said King Midas.

The next morning King awoke, starving after a terrible night's sleep. His bed had turned to gold!

King Midas tried to eat breakfast, but as soon as the food touched his mouth, it too turned to gold!

Tired and hungry, King Midas decided to go for a walk in the sun. King Midas strolled though his garden, but every time he held a flower, it too turned to gold!

Marigold returned home from school and as she jumped into her father's arms for a hug, she too turned to gold!

Eventually, everything in the palace was hard, shiny gold except for tired, hungry, lonely King Midas.

Desperate, King Midas begged Dionysus to reverse his golden touch. Dionysus agreed, but explained to King Midas that as soon as the wish was reversed, he would lose all of his former wealth.

King Midas still wanted his wish reversed for he had learned that all the wealth in the world was not what made him a truly rich man.
