It is a special day for Nana.
"I will take her a birthday gift,"
says Nate.
Page 3
Nate puts the flowers on the
kitchen table.
"Those flowers are pretty,"
Dad says.
Page 4
"Nana will like..." Nate interrupts. "Nana will LOVE these flowers!"
he says. "I will make a card, too."
"Okay," Dad says. "Remember to put the flowers..."
Page 5
Nate interrupts again. "Nana will like MY card best!"
Dad points to the flowers. "Just remember to put the flowers in..."
Nate doesn't listen. He draws flowers on Nana's card.

Later, Nate wants to bake a
birthday cake for Nana.
Mom helps him make the cake.
Nate pours flour into a bowl.
Page 7
"Now stir the mix very
carefully," Mom says.
Nate is daydreaming. He stirs
with a rush. The bowl drops to
the floor with a CRASH!
Page 8
The cake is ruined. Nate looks
at the flowers. They have wilted
because he did not put them
in water.
Page 9
Nate goes to Nana's house.
He is sad because he has no
flowers. He has no cake for Nana.
Page 10
"Happy birthday, Nana," says Nate. "I picked some flowers for
you. Dad told me to put them in water. But I did not listen."
"Mom helped me make a cake. But I did not listen. I dropped
the bowl onto the floor."

Nana smiles. "I got plenty of gifts," she says. "But you came to
visit me. We can talk and laugh together.
That is the best gift of all!"
"We will take turns talking," says Nate. He smiles, too.
"I promise to listen!"
