Max loved a good mystery. When his sister, Lola, lost her doll, who found it but Max!
Page 2
When Grandpa couldn't find his eyeglasses,
who was the gumshoe? Why Max of course!
Page 3
Max and mystery went hand in hand. And that's why preparing for Passover was one of his favorite things about being Jewish. You see, leading up to Passover, Max's mom and dad scrubbed the floors, cleaned the crevices of the couch and vacuumed every corner possible until no bit of chametz could be found.
Page 4
"What's Chametz?" Lola asked her
mom and dad as they cleaned.
"Chametz" Max answered,"is food
that has enough time to rise when it is
baked or cooked, like bread or pretzels."
Page 5
"When the Israelite slaves were freed from Egypt, they didn't have enough time to let their bread rise, and so they ate matzah, which is a cracker-like bread that bakes for only 18 minutes. On Passover, we eat matzah to remember the Israelites and their new freedom."
Page 6
The time had finally come. It was Max's turn to do what he did best: to find the chametz. Just to make sure there was something to find, Max's mother hid two rolls around their home. Max knew it was up to him to find them.
Page 7
But first his mother gave him a clue: "Lola loves me and carries me all the time. I love to have a tea party, can you figure out this rhyme?"
Page 8
Max knew it was Lola's doll.
But where was she? In a pot? In the fridge? In the shower?
Page 9
Nope. "Tea Party, ay," Max thought.
Max headed to Lola's room where
Lola was having a tea party with her doll,
who had a roll wrapped in plastic right
in front of her. "Ah, hah...mystery solved."
Page 10
"Alright, Max," said Dad, "last clue. When Grandpa falls asleep his glasses sometimes fall on the floor. Can you find the place where Grandpa likes to snore?"
Page 11
"Oh, no...Grandpa falls asleep in the chair, at the
dining room table, where could this be? I know..."
Page 12
Max went into the guest
room where Grandpa
sleeps when he visits
and on the pillow,
wrapped in plastic,
was another roll.
Page 13
Max gave the two rolls and the crumbs he found to his mom and dad.
Page 14
The next day, Max and his dad went to the synagogue
where everyone burned their chametz in a big fire.
They were ready for Passover,
and Max was ready
for another big case
later that night...
