Once upon a time, there was a boy named Tarzan who lived with his family in the jungle. Tarzan and his family and friends would spend their days climbing trees, swinging from vines, leaping over branches, and looking for bananas and berries to eat. At bedtime, Tarzan liked to count the stars in the sky.

As Tarzan grew up, he became aware of some differences between him and the rest of his family and friends. Everyone else had thick dark hair all over their bodies while Tarzan had light skin and a bit of yellow hair on his head. Also, Tarzan had the strange habit of walking on his two hind legs.

One day Tarzan crawled into his mother's
lap and asked why he looked so
different from everyone else.
Page 4
Tarzan's mother, Kala, told him the unusual story
of how he became a part of their family.
She told him she adopted him and
that he was from a different tribe.
Page 5
She recalled the story of how she found Tarzan when he was
just a baby living with his parents in a small house
by the ocean. The whole family had golden hair, pale skin,
and eyes the color of the sky. She would sometimes watch
the family happily playing on the beach.

Then one day she heard the baby crying
and did not see or hear his parents. She couldn't find
the parents anywhere. Kala did not want to leave
the sweet baby alone and decided she would care for him
as if he were one of her own. She named him Tarzan.

When Kala finished her story, Tarzan asked many more
questions about his parents. Kala told Tarzan everything she knew. Tarzan loved his adopted family and could never imagine life without them. He never asked his mother another question about his mysterious other family.

One day, as Tarzan was exploring the island, he came upon
a small house by the beach. Curious, Tarzan decided to go inside.
Tarzan was excited by all the new things in the house.
He jumped on the bouncy bed, climbed the shelves, and threw the
soft fabrics over his body. Soon, the house was very messy!

Then a shiny surface caught his attention. In that surface, Tarzan
saw a picture of someone who looked a little like his brothers,
but different. As he stared longer he realized that the picture was
doing the same things he was doing, like waving and making funny
faces. That was the first time Tarzan saw himself in a mirror!

Of all the new and interesting things in the house, Tarzan's
favorite items were the books. Every day Tarzan spent time at
the house flipping through pages and staring at all of the pictures.
Tarzan loved recognizing familiar things in the books,
like trees, flowers, and his favorite animals! Tarzan was happy to
see people who looked just like him, but slightly different.

Tarzan loved his friends and family and the jungle.
But he also wanted to meet the members of his tribe
and visit the places in the books. He decided he would build
a boat and sail across the ocean to explore.
Page 12
One day, as Tarzan was working on his boat behind the house,
he heard strange sounds. Tarzan ran excitedly to the front of the
house to see where the sounds were coming from. Tarzan was
surprised to see the images of the people from the book
come to life! At first, Tarzan was scared to greet them.
But when he saw a young girl with a friendly face he relaxed.
Page 13
The people were frightened to see what looked like an ape
running towards them. Indeed, running on his hands and feet
with long hair and no clothes, Tarzan looked like a member of his
family's tribe! But as Tarzan got closer, they realized that
instead of an ape he was a young man.

The young girl, whose name was Jane,
waved to Tarzan. With a big smile,
Tarzan pounded his chest twice to say hello.
