There once was a boy named Dummling. He was the youngest of three sons, and was constantly teased and tricked by the rest of his family.

Dummling's eldest brother, Davis, was going camping in the woods. His mother packed a dinner with soup to keep him warm and water to quench his thirst.

When Davis got to the middle of the woods,
an old man approached him asking for a sip of soup.
"If I give you my soup, there will be none for me,"
Davis replied while shooing the old man away.

When Davis returned, the middle brother, Daniel, was jealous of his brother's adventures. So, the following night, Daniel set out for his very own camping trip.

Daniel's mother packed him a soup to keep him warm and water to quench his thirst. Daniel was also approached by the old man in the woods, and like his brother, denied the starving old man both food and drink.

When Daniel returned, Dummling asked if he could follow in his brothers' footsteps and have his own camping adventure. His family just laughed at him, not thinking he was neither smart nor strong enough to survive a night in the woods.

Dummling decided to go anyway. He packed himself a soup to keep warm and water to quench his thirst.
Page 8
Dummling was, like his brothers, met by the starving old man in the woods. Unlike his brothers, Dummling shared his soup and water with the old man.

"I am so grateful," the old man said to Dummling, "that I would like to share a secret with you. Go to that tree, the oldest tree in the woods, cut it down, and I promise you will find something good inside."

Just as he finished his sentence, the old man disappeared. Dummling went to the tree, cut it down, and peered inside.
Page 11
Inside was a goose with feathers made of gold

Dummling took the goose back to his camp site. She told him of how lonely it was in the tree by herself, and how she was glad to have a kind rescuer. Dummling told the goose of his terrible family, and how lonely he was even in a full house.

Dummling decided not to return home, for because of his good deed, he had found a new family in the golden goose.
