Once upon a time, there were four little cheerful bunnies: Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-Tail, and Peter. They lived with their Mother in a cozy little home underneath a big tree.

"My little bunnies," said Mrs. Rabbit one morning, "you can go into the fields or down the road, but do NOT go in Mr. McGreggor's garden! Now run along, and don't get into trouble."

Mrs. Rabbit took her basket and her umbrella and went through the forest to the baker's. She bought a loaf of bread.

Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-Tail, who were good little bunnies, went down the road to pick blackberries.

But naughty Peter ran straight for Mr. McGreggor's garden next door, which was growing full of yummy vegetables. He stuffed his mouth full of juicy lettuce, radishes, and parsley.

Peter smiled and lay down in the green grass. Off in the distance came the loud clackity sound of Mr. McGreggor riding the lawn mowing machine. Mr. McGreggor's blue eyes widened when he spotted Peter. "Thief! Thief! You stole my vegetables?!" the farmer cried.

Peter ran all over the garden, as fast as his little legs could carry him. He even lost both his shoes! He ran straight into a gooseberry net, and got caught in it by one of the large brass buttons on his blue jacket.

Peter started crying. Luckily, a friendly woodmouse named Thomasina Tittlemouse heard his cries. She nibbled through the bottom of the net so that Peter could get free.

Peter hurried to the tool-shed, where he jumped into a watering can. His blue jacket got all wet, and he had to take it off. Next, Peter sneezed. "Atchyoo!" Mr. McGreggor ran toward him, but Peter jumped out of the watering can and leaped out the window of the tool-shed. Soon after, Mr. McGreggor finally grew tired of chasing after him.

Peter, all tired and all wet, began looking for a way out of the garden. He passed some busy sparrows and a funny, daydreaming cat, then finally spotted the gate at the other end of the cabbage patch. He slipped underneath the gate, and soon found himself safe and sound.

When he came back home without his shoes and his nice blue jacket, Peter's mother wondered what he had done with his clothes. Little did she know that Mr. McGreggor had strung up his jacket and shoes to make a scarecrow!

Peter was so tired after his big day in the garden. His mother put him to bed early with only some warm chamomile tea. But Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-Tail had bread and milk and yummy blackberries for supper, because they were good little bunnies!
