What About Opening a MeeGenius Account?
To purchase our books and access our full set of features, you will need to register and open an account. When you open or use an account, we may, at different times and stages, request both personal and non-personally identifiable information. The kinds of personal information we may ask at different times might include your name, address, telephone number, email address, gender, year of birth, and credit card information. Alternatively, you may open and access an account using your Facebook id but this requires you to consent to Facebook sharing certain information with us. Children under the age of 13 are not permitted to open an account, but must have a parent or guardian open an account which they can then use.
What Emails, etc. Do We Send?
We use your email address (and/or other contact information) to notify you about purchases or payment processing transactions, product notifications or alerts, or technical or customer support issues. In some instances, subject to your expressly providing the information, we will use SMS, in which case additional charges by your or your recipient's mobile phone carrier may apply. Our apps may also utilize the "Notifications" systems offered by our partners' platforms, such as Apple iOS or Google Android; these "Notifications" can be managed through your device operating system and are not within our control.
We will not use your email to send marketing or promotional communications, or sell or provide your email address to third parties, unless you "opt-in" to permit us to do so. Even if you "opt-in," you may unsubscribe at any time by emailing a request to email@example.com or contacting us using the information included at the bottom of each email communication. Such unsubscribes or opt-outs do not apply to communications regarding account matters.
To be clear, below is a list of the types of emails and other communications we consider to be marketing or promotional communications:
- Advertising, either sent by HMH for itself or on behalf of a third party advertising partner
- Group buying
- Third party special offers
- Contests designed to drive book sales
The following are types of emails and other communications which will continue to be sent to you even if you do not "opt- in" to receive the above marketing and promotional emails. These communications are sent as an integrated part of our offerings:
- Welcome messages
- Information about purchase transactions including receipts
- Customer support communications
- Updates about our offerings, including product-related notifications about new or modified content, features, etc.
- User-initiated communications that may be enabled within our offerings, such as emails or sms messages to invite your friends to participate in your MeeGenius Discover Book Club or share recommendations or referrals.
What About Information Requested by Platform or Device Partners?
We have no control or access to any personal information that is requested by third parties, such as Apple or Google, in connection with downloading or using the MeeGenius app or purchasing any of our books through their online payment platforms. Also, if you are logged-in to your Facebook account and use the "Like" button or similar features, your activity may appear in your Facebook newsfeed and/ or be visible to your friends or the general public depending upon your Facebook privacy settings. We have no influence or control over Facebook's privacy or other account settings.
What Information Do We Collect About Children?
What if You or Your Child Participates in a Contest, etc.?
When we ask for personal information (like an e-mail address) as part of an activity, such as for entering a contest, we will only use it for that activity and keep it only until that particular activity is complete unless you tell us it is okay to use it for broader notifications of other activities or offerings. If in connection with a contest or other activity, you or your child submits a story, artwork or anything else to us that is posted online by us, the use of your personal information will be governed by the rules for such contest or activity.
How Does the MeeGenius Discover Book Club Work?
When you participate in MeeGenius Discover Book Clubs, you give us the right to contact any individual whose email, Facebook or other contact information you provide. On your behalf, we will invite them to download the MeeGenius app and open an account with MeeGenius if they have not already done so, and join your MeeGenius Discover Book Club.
After, when you or your child recommend books, your recommended books will appear on their MeeGenius Discover Book Club shelves, identified as being recommended by you, and their recommended books will appear on your MeeGenius Discover Book Club shelf. You and your recommendations will not be shown to any users you have not invited and who have agreed to be in your MeeGenius Discover Book Club.
Furthermore, although your recommendation may be added to the aggregate totals we may display about each book, HMH does not publish any public lists of recommenders or the books they recommend. We may sell or use the purchasing and reading habits of MeeGenius users in the aggregate for the benefit of our publishing partners, authors and others. However, no individual user's reading history or habits will ever be disclosed in a manner that would allow any publishing partner, author or other third party to connect such information with such individual user or his or her personal information.
Do We Use "Cookies"?
We do use so-called "cookie" technology to collect non-personal information to improve the user experience (such as making log-ins more convenient) and enhance other features and offerings. "Cookies" are small data files which are written to your device by your browser software to be recalled and used at later times, and may be controlled by you through your browser's personal preferences. If you turn cookies off, you won't have access to many features that make your visit to our site more efficient and enjoyable, and in some cases, some of our services will not function or will function only with limited capability. In some cases, we will allow third parties to use "cookie" technology to provide services to support some of the features and offerings, such as for example, improving recommendations we or our publishing partners may make in the MeeGenius Discover Book Club.
How Do We Share Your Information?
In certain limited circumstances, we may have to disclose your personal information to service providers who assist HMH in performing our offerings, such as credit card processors, email distribution and list managers, and similar outsourced services. We will also disclose personal information when requested by a law enforcement or other governmental authority. This includes court orders or legal proceedings against or involving someone causing injury to, interference with or infringement of persons, rights or property, or when assisting in fraud protection or investigations.
How Do We Protect Your Information?
We use commercially reasonable efforts to safeguard your personal information, including the transmission of your personal information from your computer to our computers. When you place orders or access your personal information, we offer the use of a secure server, but only to the extent you do not disable or deselect the secure server method and your browser supports such functionality. For example, all credit card information you supply is automatically set to be transmitted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. However, we cannot guarantee that the security measures will not be compromised or that your personal information will remain secure under all circumstances. HMH may decide to buy or sell subsidiaries or business units, or we or any part of our business activities may be bought by or transferred to another company. As part of that kind of business transaction, the personal information of our users will generally be one of the transferred business assets. HMH reserves the right to include such personal information in any such transfer to a third party. This information may also be disclosed as part of a bankruptcy or liquidation proceeding.
